IMPORTANT CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Construction on this project has restarted. C.W. Roberts Contracting, Inc. has been awarded the completion contract to complete the project. The new contractor began work on September 27, 2021.
Work activities in the first few weeks will involve cleanup, surveying, and other tasks needed to safely resume construction. The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2022.
Why did work stop? On July 28, 2021, the original project contractor notified the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) that it was stopping work on the project.
On August 3, 2021, FDOT declared the contractor in default. The FDOT projects have contract bonds issued by a surety company, which is a contract requirement. The surety company was required to obtain a completion contractor; this process has been completed.
This project is widening CR 580 (Sam Allen Road) from west of SR 39A (Paul Buchman Highway) to east of Park Road in Plant City. The current two-lane rural road is being widened to a four-lane divided roadway with a raised median, curb and gutter, sidewalks, bicycle lanes, underground drainage pipes, and off-site ponds.
