The $96.7 million capacity improvement project is adding one lane in each direction to I-275 from north of I-4 to north of Hillsborough Avenue (US 92) using the existing right-of-way.
Other improvements include constructing noise barrier walls along the corridor, installing fencing and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices, and reconstructing the overpasses between Floribraska Avenue and Hillsborough Avenue.
Construction activities are taking place during the daytime and nighttime hours. Work requiring lane closures will occur at night between 9 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. Occasionally, interstate ramps may close at night between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Due to high traffic volumes, some of the work will be done overnight. To construct the project, heavy machinery will be used during daytime and nighttime hours. Concrete and asphalt work may produce noise, vibration, and require the use of bright lights during nighttime work.
Construction progress as of September 2024:
- 100% of gravity walls constructed
- 100% of Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls constructed
- 100% of bridge decks widened
- 92% of concrete pavement widened
- 100% of noise barrier walls constructed
- 100% of sign structures installed
- 95% of drainage installed
- 97% of sidewalks completed
This project is expected to finish summer of 2025.

Southbound I-275 Ramp (Exit 45B) to Eastbound I-4 Closing Wednesday and Thursday Nights
Tampa, FL - Temporary closures of the southbound I-275 ramp (Exit 45B) to eastbound I-4 will occur nightly on Wednesday, December 11 and Thursday, December 12 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., weather permitting.
Motorists will have to detour around the work zone by continuing south on I-275, exiting the interstate using Exit 45A (Jefferson Street), keeping left at the fork toward Downtown East, turning left onto Scott Street, and re-entering the interstate using the eastbound I-4 entrance ramp.
Advanced warning signs and electronic message boards will assist motorists traveling through the detour. Drivers should use caution while traveling through the work zone and remain alert for construction workers in the area.
These nightly ramp closures are necessary for crews to perform construction activities as part of the I-275 Capacity Improvements project.
