About
As of August 6, 2025, all construction activities associated with this project have been completed.
This project constructed corridor improvements to enhance safety for all road users. Improvements included the addition of two mid-block pedestrian crosswalks:
- at San Marco Drive/ Johnson Road
- between Elizabeth Avenue and Edna Avenue
Traffic signals were installed, along with refuge islands, curb ramp upgrades, and sidewalk connections. The signals and crossings became operational on Monday, July 7, 2025.
The project also included installation of raised medians/traffic separators in the pedestrian crossing areas. Roadway milling and resurfacing was done as needed to replace pavement markings. There was signal work at the mid-block crossings and minor drainage work associated with this project.
How the signals work
For Pedestrians: They push a button that activates the traffic signal. After the traffic signal turns red, pedestrians get a walk signal and a countdown timer. Once the walk sign is displayed on the pedestrian signal and they observe vehicles stopping, pedestrians may cross to the median. Once in the median, they will need to activate the second button to start the same cycle on the second leg of the highway crossing.
For Drivers: The signals operate like regular intersections (but at midblock). When a pedestrian pushes a button, the signal will turn yellow and then red. The pedestrian will be given time to cross, then the signal will go back to green for drivers. Drivers should always make sure no pedestrians are in the crosswalk before advancing.
