SR 44 (Gulf to Lake Highway) Resurfacing from W Homosassa Trail to N Central Avenue

The purpose of this project is to preserve and extend the life of the existing pavement through milling and resurfacing selected areas along this section of State Road 44 in Citrus County. The top layer of asphalt (friction course) will be milled and repaved in approximately 12 areas between W Homosassa Trail in the Lecanto area and N Central Avenue in Inverness. While the total distance of this stretch of highway is about 8.5 miles, only about 1.4 total miles of pavement needs replacement and will be milled and resurfaced during this project.

This is a design-build project, which is a method of project delivery in which one entity - the design-build team - works under a single contract with the FDOT to fully design and construct the project.  The contract work includes initial design through construction completion.  This contract type typically allows for faster construction of a project as design and construction can be on-going simultaneously. 

The design portion of the project is underway as of September 22, 2026. Construction is expected to begin in late November to early December 2026.
