About
The Downtown Tampa Interchange project will improve the safety and operations of the I-275/I-4 interchange in Tampa. Improvements include:
Southbound I-275 to Eastbound I-4
- Providing a two-lane exit and constructing a new exit ramp bridge (to the inside of the interchange) from SB I-275 to EB I-4
- Changing the EB exit ramp from I-4 to Ybor City by relocating access to14th/15th Streets instead of 21st/ 22nd Streets
- Widening the existing EB I-4 frontage road (13th Avenue) to two lanes
Westbound I-4 to Northbound I-275
- Widening the existing single lane ramp from WB I-4 to NB I-275 to two lanes
- Adding an additional merge lane on NB I-275 between I-4 and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. exit to the west of the current alignment
Westbound I-4 to Southbound I-275
- Widening the existing two-lane ramp from WB I-4 to SB I-275 to three lanes
- Widening the shoulders on SB I-275 between Palm Avenue and Jefferson Street
- Shifting the exit ramp from SB I-275 into downtown Tampa to the west of the current alignment
To construct the project, heavy machinery will be used during daytime and nighttime hours and at times, may produce noise, vibration, and require the use of bright lights during nighttime work.
Work requiring lane closures will occur at night between 9 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. Occasionally, interstate ramps may close at night between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Current Work Activities (June 2026)
- 100% of steel girders installed over Nebraska Avenue for the new ramp from SB I-275 to EB I-4
- 100% of concrete pavement installed for new exit ramp from NB I-275 to Ybor City
- 90% of bridge decks installed for the new ramp over Palm Avenue
- 90% of utilities relocated
- 83% of old storm drainage pipes removed
- 81% of new major drainage pipes installed
- 77% of Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls installed
- 62% of new Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) fiber installed, lighting and signalization at 14th and 15th streets is ongoing
This project is expected to finish spring 2027.
