About
Two projects have been combined to be built under one design-build construction project:
- Resurfacing of CR 52 from west of Storch Lane to US 98/US 301 (439832-1-52-01); and
- CR 52 at College Avenue / Pompanic Street Roundabout (439832-3-52-01).
The project will repave CR 52 (formerly SR 52) from west of Storch Lane in San Antonio to east of Smith Road in Dade City, and from south of Center Avenue to US 98/US 301 in Dade City. Resurfacing from east of Smith Road to south of Center Avenue was done under a previous project (429076-4).
A roundabout has been constructed at the intersection of CR 52 and College Avenue / Pompanic Street in the City of San Antonio. City of San Antonio utilities were also relocated for the roundabout.
Here is a cost breakout for construction of each of the three major portions of the construction project:
- CR 52 milling and resurfacing (project 439832-1-52-01); $7.2 million.
- CR 52 & College/Pompanic Roundabout (project 439832-3-52-01): $2.7 million
- City of San Antonio Utility relocations for roundabout (project 439832-3-56-01): $280,500

PROJECT UPDATE
Roundabout Now Open!
San Antonio / St. Leo – The new traffic roundabout on County Road 52 (CR 52) at the intersection of College Avenue and Pompanic Street opened to thru traffic on Friday, August 17, 2024.
Drivers should approach the roundabout with caution. Enter the roundabout going to the right and continue counterclockwise through the roundabout. Traffic entering the roundabout must yield to traffic already in the roundabout, but drivers should not stop if it is clear to enter. All turns onto connecting roads and continuing on CR 52 are right turns from the roundabout. The speed limit in the roundabout is 25 MPH.
Please remain alert to workers and equipment as construction continues in the roundabout area and along CR 52 to resurface the corridor from west of Storch Lane to US 98/US 301

Modern Roundabout Safety and Navigation
- Roundabouts are the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) leading action to reduce high-speed right-angle crashes and resulting fatalities. Roundabouts eliminate high-speed right-angle crashes at the intersection. Drivers are to travel at speeds less than 30 MPH and enter into the roundabout by merging.
- The FHWA has conducted studies that demonstrate tremendous benefits of the roundabout design, including (1) Up to 90% reduction in fatalities; (2) 76% reduction in bodily injury cases; (3) 30-40% reduction in pedestrian crashes and (4) 75% fewer conflict points than four-way intersections.
- This modern single-lane roundabout will be posted to be navigated at speeds of 25 MPH or less.
